New Smoker Nuggets make fumigating rabbits easier & more effective
Marking the entrances to rabbit warrens is an important pre-requisite to effective fumigation. Leaving even small openings open can allow rabbits or phosphine gas to escape.
Larger warren complexes can be smoked using petrol blower devices but small to medium warrens can now be marked using the new ACTA Smoker Nuggets. These nuggets were first developed by clever rabbit controllers at the Bellarine Landcare Group, near Geelong. Until now the nuggets have been provided in re-used wine caps only to local landholders. Due to the retirement of the developers, ACTA was approached to scale up the product and make it available nationally. We have used purpose designed aluminium caps that are double the size of the prototype wine caps.
We now announce the new version of the smoker nuggets and a smoker nugget starter kit that contains a reusable holder stick and 5 marker pegs. Nuggets come in boxes of 25 with full instructions. Typically, only 1 or 2 nuggets are needed to mark a warren. The nuggets are ignited with a strong lighter torch and then smoulder to produce large quantities of non-irritating white smoke for a few minutes. The lighted nuggets are placed into the main upwind entrance, then points of smoke exit are marked for closure before aluminium phosphide tablets are put into the warren. A small portable battery leaf blower (available from ACTA or Bunnings) can be used to help blow the smoke throughout the warren.
